Hyperopia is a refraction disorder that correlates to cytoplegic refraction because the biggest tonic accomodation is due to hyperopia. The aim of this study was to determine clinical characteristics of latent hyperopia among school-aged patients in dr. Saiful Anwar Hospital during 2005. Retrospective data of hyperopia patients 7 to 18 years of age who visited the outpatient clinic of dr. Saiful Anwar Hospital from January to Desember 2005 had been reviewed. Patient's age, sex, noncycloplegic refraction and cycloplegic reflaction were recorded. Refractive errors were measured by subjective method and converted to spherical equivalent. Patients with best corrected visual acuity without and under cycloplegia can achieve 20/20 were included in this study. Subjects were divided into 4 groups according ti their age (7-9y; 10-12y; 13-15y; 16-18y) and the amont of latent hyperopia was measured. There were 270 eyes from 135 patients consisting of 46 boys and 89 girls. The mean age was 12.2 ± 3.3 years. Noncycloplegic refractive states were emmetropia (72.22%), hyperopia (25.19%), and myopia (2.59). Mean values of latent hyperopia were 0.40 ± 0.32 D. The mean of latent hyperopia was higher in boys (0.50 ± 0.35 D) than girls (0.36 ± 0.29 D). The mean of latent hyperopia was biggest in the first group (0.44 ± 0.35 D) and smallest in the fourth group (0.35 ± 0.30 D). In this study, the sex specific incidence was higher in girls than boys. The most common noncycloplegic refractive state was emmetropia. The mean amount of latent hyperopia were decreasing with age and higher in boys than girls.
