Isi artikelThis article presents an analysis of the relationships between complimenting strategies associated with male and female language use and evaluations of the effectiveness of written discourse. The data base is a set of 47 peer reviews of academic papers written by graduate students in the form of letters. The study draws on work from several theoretical perspectives including work in discourse analysis, pragmatics and complimenting, politeness theory, language and gender, and audience. The authors analyzed the relationship between complimenting strategies and raters' perceptions of the inter personal, ideational, and overall effectiveness of the peer reviews. They found that the use of certain complimenting strategies associated with male and female language use, specifically compliment intensifiers and personal referencing, were correlated with lower ratings of ideational effectiveness. The study illustrates specific ways that gender is involved in influencing perceptions of effectiveness in writing.
