All countries are beautiful in spring, but Japan is preminently so." So declared British botanist Robert Fortune, who visited Japan from 1860to 1862, a time of tumult at the end of the generally stable Edo period (1603-1868). Spring was certainly a season of special beauty and charm in Edo-period in Japan. But the attractiveness of the country was notlimited to spring in particular or even to the natural beauty of all the seasons. The greatest allure of the Edo world was that of its people.
