Isi artikelUsing data from an English lesson taught at primary school level, the article tries to show how the concept of performance might be used to understand some characteristics of verbal interaction in the language classroom. It starts out from an analysis of the concept of performance as it is used in linguistic anthropology and discusses parallels between performance and language teaching. Such parallels are the use of a special speech style, reflexive use of language, use of the poetic function of language, specific participant frameworks and a 'make-believe' frame. In a final step of the argument the findings about language teaching as performance are related to the notion of authenticity and to questions of teacher training.
