Isi artikelMajor cause of mortality in Indonesia shift to Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). One of the most common NCDs, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) which is linked by common preventable risk factor related to life style i.e unhealthy diet and physical inactivity and intermediate risk factors i.e hypertension, obesity and blood lipids. Data from Indonesia National Health Survey 2004 has been analyzed to map the emerging epidemics of the diabetes and to identify the risk factors and the physiological factors of DM. Selected household have been chosen and interviewed in the context of individual characteristic, morbidity and blood test. The cross sectional and retrospectively for one year back study has been done. The result showed that the prevalence of diabetes diagnosed by health provider based on interview is 1.2%; prevalence of diabetes based on blood glucose level is 9.0%. The prevalence of behavior risk factors are very high, unhealthy diet (95.8%) and physical inactivity (24.9%). The prevalence of hypertension, of obesity base on BMI and of hypercholesterolemia among 25 years old and older are 27.3%, 3.2% and 0.9% respectively. We mapped the behavior risks in detail, compared between groups of socioeconomic strata and location (rural and urban) and region.
