A production line is a sequence of machines or workstations arranged to provide useful products. Such a line usually faces problems related to the realibility of the machines, i.e. a machine can fail so it has to be repaired and forces the line to stop. Generally speaking, buffers can prolong the production run, hence will increase the throughput. However, their capacities should not be too large. Under some assumptions. Gershwin proposed a method to calculate a line perfonnance e.g. throughput, and WfP level in the buffers. By using this model the optimum buffer capacities can be determined.
