This article is written to help bridge classic Chinese health care systems with the current complementary/ alternative medical point of view. Readers of this article will gain insight to the fundamental principles and practical use of two particular mind/body health care methods. Content discussed in this article includes relevant descriptions of tai chi for health and medical qigong (pronounced “chee kung”), what they are, where they come from, and how long they have been in use. In addition, discussion is presented on why these systems are important to health care practitioners, specific mental/physical benefits of these systems, contraindications, how to find a qualified teacher of tai chi and medical qigong, a typical session, and existing, relevant research. Recommendations for other resources and references are also provided in this article.
