Isi artikel
This paper proposes a typology of cosmopolitanism that represents the bureaucratic and professional perspectives within an organization. This typology then is related to the innovativeness of organizations. The setting for the study is hospital acquisition of medical innovations. The cosmopolitanism variable is a familiar one in behavioural research. It has its roots in the conceptualization of cosmopolitans and locals as ideal types (Gouldner, 1957 ; Merton, 1957). “Cosmopolitans” are oriented beyond their community or organization, whereas “locals” are oriented toward their immediate community or organization. The organizational behaviour literature frequently has included cosmopolitanism as an indicator of “professionalism” in exploring theories of organizational innovativeness (Hage & Dewar, 1973 ; Pierce & Delbecq, 1977).
