Isi artikelPublic opinion polls estimate that more than 97 million U.S. residents went online in search of health information during this past year, with more than 70% reporting that online health information had influenced a treatment decision (Berland et al., 2001). Health information can include information on preventing (staying healthy) and managing illnesses and making decisions related to health and health care. The Internet is the largest searchable medical library in the world; thus, it has the potential to be a powerful resource for meeting some of home health clients’ health education needs. To achieve this requires that Web sites be well organized and give accurate, up-to-date information. Additionally, the information needs to be written at a level understandable to clients. According to recent health literacy studies, many people cannot understand material written at a ninth-grade reading level. Currently, the U.S. Department ofHealth and Human Services recommends that client education materials not exceed a sixth-grade reading level (Berland et al., 2001; California Healthcare Foundation, 2001).
