Without a ready database of statewide or nationwide information, this article must be rather limited in scope, restricted mostly to Somerset County in Pennsylvania. Somerset County is part of Appalachia, with a predominantly elderly and rural population and no public transportation. As such, in the early 1960s and before, there was no agency to provide health care to people at home other than physicians making house calls or friendly neighbors.
