Historically, the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) and the Community Health Assessment Program (CHAP) provide a presite field review prior to the onsite accreditation survey. Recently, the Accreditation Process Improvement Initiative (API) of the Joint Commission for Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) incorporated a similar aspect into its planned future survey process. The initiative has begun with a paper pilot testing in selected hospitals, long-term care, and assisted organizations. This column will compare the existing presite field review of ACHC and CHAP with the process being field tested by the JCAHO.
