Providing holistic care necessitates an understanding and incorporation ofa patient’s perspective on life at religious and spiritual levels. To the naive, both levels could be ascertained by asking a patient to disclose his or her religion or religious affiliation, but issues ofreligion and spirituality run much deeper and are more complex. For the purpose ofclarity, we must identify the characteristics first of religion and then ofspirituality so that we can better understand that both are important considerations in health and illness.
