Isi artikelHealth care providers lament the lack of applicants for open nursing positions throughout the United States. One institution reportedly advertised regionally for 6 months without drawing even one applicant. And it does not stop there. The American Nurses Association (1996) reports that the registered nurses (RN) population continues to age, with the average nurse’s age being 44.3 years in 1996 and the average working nurse’s age being 42.3 years. Enrollment in diploma, associate, and baccalaureate nursing programs is declining, whereas the age and, subsequently, the need for health care is increasing. Regardless of the cause, our nation is facing a critical shortage of qualified professional nurses. What options exist when an applicant pool is nonexistent? One option is recruiting and assisting nurses from the international community to come to the United States. Do not jump on that plane yet. Credentialing foreign workers for nursing is a lengthy and cumbersome process and one that should not be entered into without first doing some homework.
