"Metalinguistic" phenomena have occasionally been identified as posing specific translation problems. These phenomena are however more variegated than their discussion in the literature on translation might lead one to suppose. The article looks at examples taken from Walker Percy's novel The Thanatos Syndrome and its German translation with a view to proposing some necessary differentiations that attempt (a) to do justice to the way in which these phenomena constitute a stylistic dimension of their own and represent an important strand in the overall texture and literary meaning of a work offiction, and (b) to provide a basis for appropriate discussion of the specific translation problems posed by these phenomena.
