Isi artikel
This article is organized into a number of sections. It begins with an overview of the indispensable role of the mass media in a democratic setting. The second section attempts to clarify the major concepts used in the article to avoid misunderstanding. The concepts defined are: mass media, democratic sustenance/consolidation and press freedom. The third section looks at the mass media/democracy nexus, and gives a brief appraisal of the mass media during the short period of democratic experiment starting on 29 May 1999. The final section dispassionately discusses the major impediments facing the mass media in Nigeria. The article suggests that a boisterous, courageous and independent media with a broader and more comprehensive worldview in a plural society is a sine qua non of a sustainable democracy in Nigeria.
