In recent years, youth violence has been on the minds of Americans, our awareness heightened by multiple school shootings in a short period of time. For much of the past century, youth violence in the United States has been consistently 4 times higher than in the nearest industrialized country (Scotland) and more than 20 times higher than other industrialized countries such as Austria and Japan (Fingerhut & Kleinman, 1990). In the 1980s, youth violence increased from this baseline of excessive violence. Some suggest that this increase in violence corresponded to the introduction of crack cocaine to the drug market (Prothrow-Stith & Weissman, 1991). Over the past 10 years, violent arrests for children age 18 and younger have increased by 150% (Cohall, Cohall, & Bannister, 1998). In the wake of seven school-shootings over the course of 18 months, it is increasingly evident that some of our youth have turned to violence to handle conflict.
