Writing for publication often times seems to be relegated to those employed in academia or research where it is part of the job description and retention criteria. Instead, writing for publication ought to be something we all do, regardless of where we work. There are many reasons why we should write for publication. Writing for publication strengthens our profession. It is a vehicle for sharing information and opinions with colleagues, other disciplines, and the public. Writing for publication strengthens us as professionals. Being published increases ones potential for promotion and career advancement. It supports our professional development in that we gain recognition as having expertise in a particular aspect of the discipline. It can help build organizational support or funding for our initiatives. Finally, writing for publication strengthens us as people. It is enormously rewarding and a real ego booster to see your name in print. A published article is tangible evidence of an accomplishment, visible proof of a job well done.
