This paper presents what are considered to be the essential characteristics of adverbial phrases at the syntactic level as well as at the discourse level. At the syntactic level, I make use of paratactic and hypotactic concepts in the description of adverbial phrases. At the discourse level, I try to relate the use of adverbial phrases with concepts such as thematization, information structure, and focus.
