Isi artikel
In this article, I discuss why two ethnic groups in Taiwan, “Taiwanese” and “Mainlanders,” generally choose different paths to upward mobility. I outline the nature of Taiwan’s political and economic structure and how that structure relates to differences in educational attainment (and thus differences in occupation) between these two ethnic groups. Differential educational opportunities resulting from government policy have limited especially among ethnic Taiwanese upward mobility requiring academic credentials, and from the 1960s to 1970s, running one’s own small business became the most significant mobility path for less-educated Taiwanese.
