It was most appropriate that the premiere column in the Circle of Research and Practice Department of Health Promotion Practice (Lancaster & Roe, 2000) began with an update of the national progress made to close four major gaps between research and practice: the communications gap, the accessibility gap, the credibility gap, and the expectations gap (Lancaster, 1992). As health promotion practitioners interested in narrowing those gaps, particularly at the state and local levels, Lancaster and Roe speak to us. Our thoughts come from our combined 35-plus years in four health departments in three states, working on academic, state, and county levels.
