Industrialization in China in the late nine teenth and early twentieth centuries had a pro found impact on the soci ety and economy. Most studies of industrialization in China have there fore taken either of two strategies of discussion, one social and the other eco nomic. Those of the social-based approach emphasize the guandu-shangban (“official supervision, merchant management”) alli ances between leaders of the self-strength en ing movement and their official-entrepreneur allies in the cre ation of early industrial projects. They argue that early modernization schemes were facilitated by a confluence of Con fucian social organization and early merchant lead er ship (Feuerwerker, 1958; Liu, 1994). Other stud ies exam ine the eco nomic impact of for eign and Chinese entre preneurs, argu ing that the development of spe cific sectors of indus try and infra structure resulted in the grad ual mod ernization of sev eral regions of China and benefited the empire as a whole (e.g., Rawski, 1989).
