Since the 1920s, novels of the so-called Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies School have generally been regarded as a traditional, conservative kind of popular fiction. The name yuanyang hudie pai itself, suggesting stereotypical love stories, was definitely meant to be polemical. Leading writers of what we nowcallMayFourth Literature dismissed the contents of widely read magazines such as Libailiu (Saturday) as reactionary trash, thereby seeking to project their own writings as the “real” and the “new” literature of their time.
