The concept of place is thus essential for media and communication studies. The theoretical work of several globalization theorists (see, for example, Giddens, 1990; Harvey, 1989) suggests that it is more important than ever before. As Giddens (1990: 64) puts it, ‘globalisation can be defined as the intensification of worldwide social relations which link distant localities (emphasis added) in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles away and vice versa’. However, it is easily forgotten that in the 19th century electronic news already contributed to globalization and thus increased readers’ sense of place. Electronic news in the 19th century started to build the bridge between here and there by bringing places where events occurred to readers of news.
