Isi artikel
In a polemical critique of Judith Butler, and of postmodernism, entitled ‘The Professor of Parody’ (1999: 37), Martha Nussbaum accuses the feminist theorist of being a ‘collaborator with evil’ (1999: 45). Her critique focuses on Butler’s impenetrable writing style, her daring to venture into an arena outside of her discipline – that is, law – her failure to produce a normative theory of social justice, and the lack of connection between her ‘fancy words on paper’ and feminist political struggle on the ground. I do not intend to provide a comprehensive response to Nussbaum’s critique. My concern is in challenging the way in which the trope of the Indian woman’s body is invoked by Nussbaum to justify her principal arguments.
