Isi artikelAs community-based prevention efforts increase, public health professionals face new challenges. One critical issue is that African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians/ Alaska Natives, and Asian/Pacific Island Americans are ethnic and racial subgroups that have been underserved in the past and need to be represented in health promotion initiatives in the future. Participatory, empowering types of evaluation are well suited to community- based initiatives that focus on improving access and reducing health disparities. These approaches articulate a strong belief in empowerment, rely on an iterative process of learning and doing, recognize the power of participation and work to enhance or sustain that participation, and rely on the release of energy and community transformation that is generated by group dialogue and action (Coombe, 1997).
