High piezometric pressures were observed in the downstream and foundation of Saddle Dam 2 of batu Bulan Dam, located at Sumbawa, NTB, during the first impounding, based on standpipe piezometer readings which were installed at the downstream slope and the ope second saddle dam. The high pressures might be came from the right aboutment and reservoir, due to the bad downstream filter zone and the porous condition of highly weathered jointed sandstone intercalated by siltstone of the dam foundation. The high pressure and under seepage may cause soil migration or piping from the body and foundation of the dam. Countermeasures by using granular material as counterweight was recommended to anticipate the migration of fine materials from the foundation rock joints as well as to increase the safety factor of downstream slope stability. In general, the Batu Bulan dam Still safe and under controlled during the first impounding, but monitoring of the behaviour of the dam has to be carried out continously during the operation stage.
