Preventive prosthodontics emphasizes the importance of any procedure that can delay or eliminate future prosthodontics problems. The basic overdenture concept is to preserve the residual soft and hard tissues. Mechanical stabilization can be improved by using attachment and retentive devices with the basic principles of complete denture design. Many attachments used to improve the retention of overdentures require specialized equipment, precise chairside and laboratory techniques. Most are subjected to wear and may require adjustment or replacement. Magnetic retention system could solve some of these problems. The system is used in cased where for reasons of cost, convenience or patient motivation, conventional retainers are unsuitable.
