Isi artikelOur earlier results (barone, shrimp & sprott, this issue prompted us to question the robustness of the mere ownerhsip effect examined by beggan (1992). In this article, we challenge the criticism raised in beggan and alison's (this issue) response. After a careful analysis of their concerns, we maintain our position that the mere ownership affect is at best, a tricky critter to capture. We offer suggestion for future research but may provide insight into the empirical irregularity observed in the prior research. Beggan and allison (this issus) claim that the article they read (barone, shrimp & sprott, this issue) is not the same article that we wrote. Their underlying theme is that we have misunderstood or misinterpreted our own data. Their argument reduces to the follwoing assertions : a. where we report equivocal evidence of mere ownership effect, their reanalysis of our data confirms such an effect b. our failure to deterct a mere ownership effect in individual studies was due to either underpowered sample sizes or methodological flaws c. our criticism of the private self enhancement explanation used by beggan (1992) to account for the results of his three studies is without merit d. we claimed that beggan's research suffers from demand artifacts and experimenter expectancy bias, and e. in offering an alternative explanation for beggan;s findings, we failed to consider how likability may mediate ownership effects. After addressing each assertion, we conclude that most of the concerns raised by beggan and allison represent micharacterizaitons of our work. Consequently, we feel that our initial article does not represent :more three than meets their eyes" but rather than beggan and allison's rejoinder offers "less there than they would have us believe."
