The Influence of The Composition of Charcoal-Barium Carbonate Carburizing Medium on The Case Carburising Characteristics of Low Carbon Steel: The aim of this research was to discover the influence of the composition of both the charcoal carburizmg medium and Barium-Carbonate on the characteristics of case carburizing, with particular reference to hardness distribution, case depth and microstructure. This study employed experimental tests, the specimen was low carbon steel with a carbon content. There were 5 charcoal media each with a differing barium content levels, namely 0%, 20%, 25% and 30% by weight of charcoal. The carburizing process was conducted at 900°C for 2 hours, hardening was conducted by quenching the steel in water. Then a 1kg Vickers test was used to test for micro hardness to a depth of 1150 Im. The best case hardness results were obtained with a Barium-Carbonate additive treatment of 20%, which gave 867 kg/mm2 to an effective depth of 300 im. Whereas, the microstructure formed was marten site.
