Isi artikelThe Effect Of Water Content On Soil Friability : This study was enacted as there are many theories on the unimportance of both soil friability and tillage in the preparation of a medium for plant growth. Thus, the aim of this research was to study the influence of water content on soil friability and to determine the optimum water content for cultivation. The location of the experiment was at the Agricultural Machine Power Laboratory of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, the Faculty Agricultural Technology, Brawijaya University. And the experiments were carried out from June — July 2002. The variables observed were soil compression strength in various soil volumes and water contents. The soil used was obtained from the Balai Benih Induk Palawija Bedali, Lawang, Malang Regency. Results indicate that soil water content has an effect on soil compression strength and on the interaction between soil water content and soil volume. The smaller the volume of soil with low water content, the higher the soil compression strength. And, conversely, the bigger the volume of soil with a high water content, the lower the soil compression strength. The highest soil compression rate was 166.39 kPa and the lowest 7.19 kPa. Friability in this soil was observed at water contents of between 20 and 26% soil weight, with a friability (k) level of between 0.25 and 0.27.
