Isi artikelErosion and sedimentation are both interrelated and affect the process of moulding, transportation and the laying down of sediment on ground surfaces. The first step in this study was to calculate the extent of erosion and sediment levels in the Penasen river and its tributaries through calibrating parameter values and ftctors based on the conditions prevailing in the Penasen basin. The figures collected show that the erosion level was around 10 tons/ha/year (0.625 mm/year), and that sediment in suspension was 46.8 mg/It. Whereas the maximum tolerable erosion limit was 8 tons/ha/year (0.5 mm/year) and that for suspended sediment 146 mg/It. In conclusion, if the forested area in the Penasen river basin is increased by 11.678 ha, and if this is combined with the introduction of better tilling/cultivation methoda, the erosion can be reduced to a tolerable 7.78 tons/halyear and sediment in suspension to 4 omg/lt.
