Students' opinion about learning process in Microbiology Department; preparation for the implementation of competencybased curriculum Background: Before implementation of the competency-based curriculum, it is necessary to acquire information about current educational programme. Using Microbiology Department Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University as an example, this paper describes the medical students' opinion about teaching and learning process during 2004-2005 at this Department. Methods: This'is a quantative and qualitative study. Students' opinions were collected using the questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGDs). Results: A total of 154/194 students responded to the questionnaires (79,4 % response rate). Innovation conducted by Microbiology Department such as interactive lecture, in which students actively discuss the subject matter facilitated by the teacher (who also giving feed back), has been agreed. Nevertheless, for this innovation they suggested introduction lectures, scheduled, and sufficient time for preparation. Individual tasks only agreed by 14,9% responden, however, in FGDs then were clarified that those could be accepted if have objective score with proportional weighing and enough time for preparation. Students like written examination using case cluster because of it's clinical relevance, easy to understand, interesting, and it train to think integratively. There were several students' complaints in term of type of assessment, unclear learning objectives, and insufficient of references and microscopes. Conclusions: Students can accept several active learning innovations in Mirobiology Department. Therefore, it is hoped that the competency-based curriculum can be implemented without significant barrier from the students. Students' complaining should be used to increase the awarenes of staff and educational committee.
