Robert Maynard Hutchins president of the university of chicago from 1929 to 1951, was arguably the dominant academic personlity of the prewar years, Clark Kerr called hm the last of the giants meaning the last major university presiden who attempted to reshape an institution. Today he is still invoked for his vision of a liberal education. According to Hannah Gray, his present successor at the university, Hutchins deplore what he saw as the triumph of scientism and pedantry and vocationalism over a genuine learning that looked toward the unity of knowledge and the forms of intellectual inquiry of his personal magnetism .....
