Declaration of lisbon 1981 says, that the patient has the right to either accept or refuse treatment after receiving adequate information. It means that A man is the master of his own body and he may expressly prohibit the performance of life - saving surgery or other treatment as in intensive care unit (ICU) etc. A doctor may well believe that an operation or other form of treatment includes caring a patient in the ICU is desirable or necessary, but the law does not permit him to substitute his judgement for that of the disagreeing patient by any form of "artifice" or "deception". Every human being of adult years and sound mind has a right to determine what shall be done with his own body and a surgeon who performs an operation without his patient's consent, commits an assault for which he is liable in damages. Then, to preclude such liability his conduct should be in accord with medical or esp surgical standard operating procedure (surg, SOP).
