Isi artikelBACKGROUND:To investigate whether incidence rates and causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes changed after the introduction of the screening programme, to compare mortality from sudden death in screened athletes with a parallel population of unscreened, nonathletic individuals, and to examine trends in the disqualification of screened athletes. DESIGN: This retrospective, observational study examined data on competitive athletes and nonathletic individuals aged between 12 and 35 years from the Veneto region of Italy, over the period 1979-2004. After introduction of the national screening programme in 1982, all 'young athletes' (ie, individuals aged 12-35 years who participated in organized sports involving regular training and competition) underwent a electrocardiogram and examination of family and personal medical history to determine whether they were fit to participate in athletic activity. A parallel analysis of causes of disqualification from athletic activity among screened athletes was also performed, RESULTS: During the estimated 2,938,730 person-years (py) of the study, there were 55 sudden cardiac deaths among screened athletes; an overall incidence of 1.9 per 100,000 py. Death occurred during athletic activity in 91% of cases. During the study period, the number of sudden deaths decreased from 3.6 per 100,000 py in 1979-1980 to 0.43 per 100,000 py in 2001-2004 (p
