Isi artikel
Hospitality is the largest global industry and therefore should naturally be a concern of those interested in international business ethics. Hospitality is one of the noblest words in the english langsuage, connoting welcome, friendship, comfort and gracious service. Yet, hospitality can also be abused. The links between hospitality and ehics is strengthened by the fact that virtually critical issue in today's hospitality industry is strongly ethical in nature. One such question is sexual harrasment in the international hospitality industry. Sexual harrasment in the workplace is the epitome of unethical behaviour and it is perpetrated as all levels of organizations. However, sexual harrasment still remains difficult to define, police and prevent. Nevertheless, we do know that sexual harrasment is illegal. Firms are responsible for providing a work environemnt in which an employee is free from harrasment. The entire hospitality industry may be particularly susceptible ot incidents of sexual harrasment given certain of its characteristics, such as ambiguity of "hospitality service", the unusual hours and conditions of work, the interaction of persons in the delivery of service and traditional personnel practices in the industry. The hospitality industry is in the business of satisfying guests' needs. The fine line between service and entertainment can be misunderstood, leading to inappropriate expectations and awkward, unpleasant and sometimes ugly situations. It has been demonstrated that the hospitality industry has a relatively high incidence of harrassment compare to other businesses. Sexual harassment in the international hospitality workplace appears in many forms. In all cases, the offensive behaviours are unethical because they poison the workplace, they undermine the confidence of the victims, they focus on the person's sex rather than on job performance, they put the temporary pleasure of one person tract, the sanctity of another and they misuse power. Such behaviours demeand, distract, dehumanize and demoralize. In order to have a workplace free of sexual harrassment, the commitment of upper management is critical. Management's commitment should be clearly stated in a policy that defines sexual harrasment in explicit terms, prohibits such behaviour and specifically states that the prohibition applies equally to the actions of supervsors and managers, co - workers, customers and suppliers.
