Isi artikelIn September 2006, Abe Shinzo assumed the office of prime minister under the banner of Hopen conservatism.” Abe is an unapologetic nationalist who stresses Japanese pride and respect for Japan’s history and traditions. Abe’s own political fortunes rose rather abruptly during his tenure as deputy chief cabinet secretary under Prime Minister Koizumi Jun’ichirO thanks to his highly visible hard-line stance on North Korea’s past abduction of Japanese nationals. This, together with his uncompromising stance toward China, has earned him a reputation as a hawk, endearing him to right wing elements. At the same time, many in Japan and abroad have expressed concern over what they perceive as similarities between his stance and that of America’s neoconservatives. Abe’s emphasis on an "open" conservatism can be seen as an attempt to deal with such malaise by stressing that his conservatism and nationalism are not exclusionist or isolationist in nature.
