Isi artikel
any of the art forms and accomplishments we associate with Japanese culture were forged within a system of small groups and networks, particularly during the Edo period (1603—1868). But in speaking of small groups and networks as one of the keys to Japanese culture, we need to distinguish between this phenomenon and the sort of collectivism or group mentality that subordinates the individual to the collective good. The groups and networks that have played such a prominent role in Japanese culture are not the kind of organization associated with collectivism or the group mentality. In fact, the Japanese of the Edo period were not nearlyas group-oriented as most people—including many of today’s Japanese—are inclined to believe.
