Isi artikel
The book that come sup most frequently indiscussions of bushido [the way of the samurai] is probably Nitobe Inazo’s Bushido: The Soul of Japan [1900. It’s certainly an admirable work in that it provided the first real explanation of bushido, but in the final analysis, it’s no more than an introduction for Westerners. Because Nitobe was a Christian with an extensive Western education, his writing stylewent down well with foreign readers. But the fact is that bushido developed in an environment completely divorced from Christianity and Shakespeare and the like. Too often his explanations betray a Western mind-set. On the other hand, if I were asked to name a book that explains it better, I’d be hard pressed to give one. The writings of the great swordsman Yamaoka Tesshu [1836—88], for example, are little more than a collection of Zen sayings.
