In the age of high technology of the humanities, especially literature is likely to be neglected. Science and technology get much more considerable attention than literature. Literature sounds, according to some students, to be useless for their future career. For the english department students, it is the english skill which is able to cope with their future job, not the english literature. Nowadays students tend to be of the opinion that learning poetry, prose or drama is time - wasting activitiy. The deal with literature merely because they are students of literature major without any understanding of its role. Even some of them perceive that ltierature does not play transparant role. This phenomenon challenges the place of literature in the teaching of english and encourages the writer to write a short paper about the role of literature teaching for the english department students. This paper will highlight the role of literature not as a means for validating the students to be scholar of literature but for enriching the students'cultural insights.
