Isi artikelMetabolic syndrome (MS) is becoming a serious global problem. We carried out this study at a referred clinic in Sudan to investigate the occurrence of metabolic syndrome among type 2 diabetic patients. The relevant data were collected, anthropometric measurements and, laboratory estimation of triglyceride and high density lipoproteincholesterol (HDL-C) were made. Our study included 250 patients (95 men, 155 women) with mean age of 52 ± 13 years. The MS was diagnosed according to criteria of National Cholesterol Education Programme (NCEP) in 57 patients (26 men and 31 women) having mean age of 58 ± 15 years. Amongst these forty eight patients (84.2%) were from urban areas. The mean waist circumference was 106.3 ± 11.4 cm. The mean systolic pressure was 149 ± 21 mm Hg and the diastolic pressure was 89 ± 18 mm Hg. The mean triglyceride level was 1.94 ± 0.17 mmol/L, whereas the HDL-C was 0.81 ± 0.19 mmol/L. Forty eight patients had three components of MS, with hypertension being the common component (next to diabetes). Our study indicates a significant occurrence of MS among our diabetic population. As the tools to investigate the different components of MS are simple so we recommend to encourage the staff in primary care settings to screen for MS among the diabetic patients. Also there are prevention implications of identifying the MS through addressing modifiable factors such as weight reduction, exercise and healthy diet.
