Isi artikelA surfactant is a surface - active agent that can be produced by a chemical or biochemical synthesis. The main characteristic of a surfactant of having amphiphilic molecules (head - fail configuration), meaning that it has polar and non - polar groups at the same molecule, has led to various applications of it in industries. The most widely used anionic surfactant in cleaning products today is linear alkylbenzene sulphonate (LAS) synthesized from petrochemicals. To reduce the dependency on petrochemical synthesized surfactants it is necessary to find alternative is methyl ester sulponate (LAS) synthesized form petrochemiclas. To reduce the depenceny on petrochemical synthesized surfactants, it is necessary to find alternative anionic surfactants of vegetable oils bases. The most prospective alternative is methyl ester sulphonate (MES). This research was aimed at finding the best condition for sulphonation process to produce MES of C(18) - palm kernel methyl ester and at obtaining the best characteristics of MES. A completely factorial randomized design with two factors, the rato of methyl ester and H2SO4 reactants and reaction time, was used. Results showed that the best condition of suphonation process was obtained with the ratio of reactants of 1 : 1,4 and reaction time of 30 minutes. The best MES characteristics resulted included pH value of 6,88 color of purple (L value 60,99 ; a value + 3,28 ; b value -3,01 and oHue 317,50). ability to reduce surface tension of 36,20 m N / m (53,08%) and interfacial tension of 37,70 m N / m (96,17%). ability to maintain emulsion stability of 73,76%. detergency of 16 FTU turbidity (100%) and ability to maintain foaming lifetime of 4,44 hours. Results of IR spectra showed that sulphonate charges were formed at the range of wave number of 1250 - 1150 (s) and 1075 - 1000 (m) cm (-1).
