Isi artikel
The ability to communicate interculturally refers to someone's ability to exchange information efficiently and effectively with other people who have different cultural backgrounds. In pragmatic studies, nonlinguistic elements and culture have so often been taken for granted that they have not received a proper analysis. The present paper focuses more on the speakers' and their interlocultors' culture that forms a stereotype and influences the communication scheme. It will be argued that being sensitive to one's own culture and one's interlocutor's culture is an important factor in determining whether or not communication is successful. This is illustrated by two different groups of native speakers, namely, Indonesian and German, who experienced communication barriers because of different cultural backgrounds.
