Apart from listening. speaking. and writing. English reading skills seem to the most crucial skill to master for education in Indonesia. As yet. some reading teachers may not be aware that the processes of reading the students experience will guarantee the product. namely comprehension. In relation with this notion. this pardiscusses three important issues in reading. they are: (I) what kinds of models of ing processes have been developed to teach reading: (2) what happens when ents read a passage. and (3) what kinds of activities could promote students learning in the reading class. Models of reading recognised sofar are bottom-up. top-down. and interacmodels. The last model is in fact the combination of the formers. next as the students may use different processes when reading. reading teachers should also h different strategies to deal with different types of text. Furthermore, pre-read-activities should be able to prepare the students to explore the text and to build motivation for reading. Finally some strategies such as involving prediction or anticipation of the and activation of the students background knwledge. as well as questioning text analytically and critically are considered as techniques which would ensure the success of reading.
