The power to suddenly disrupt life, as well as the safely and wellbeing of individuals and communities at an extreme level is a frightening quality associated with natural events and perhaps no more so than with large earthquakes. History is full of stories of how earthquakes reduced towns and villages to rubble in a matter of minutes, killing thousands of people and injuring many more. Recent examples are the earthquake in Pakistan and India on 8 October 2005 and the underwater earthquake that not only destroyed buildings in Indonesia but also set into effect the tsunami tnat suosequen~iy ravagea coastisnes OT seven counfnes OT the South-East Asia Region on 26 December 2004.
