Isi artikelAfter the oil-shocks of the early 1970s occurred, frantic efforts were made to find new and alternative sources of energy to lessen dependence on oil that became very expensive and also scarce. Energy from biomass seemed to be a good choice. Several technologies were available: fermentation processes to produce ethanol, anaerobic fermentation to produce methanol, to mention but a few. Fuel wood and agricultural waste became also important. However, with strongly declining world prices of oil in the 1980s, biomass lost its lustre and not attractive anymore. Efforts to develop biofuels were mostly abandoned. That is, until 2004-2005, when world prices of oil again soared to even unprecedented levels. Moreover, it was recognized that world oil production had already passed its peak, and oil prices will therefore continue to increase significantly in the future. Again, biomass as a source of alternative and renewable energy became attractive. In this paper an attempt is made to provide an overview of some technologies, old and new, to produce energy from biomass.
