Isi artikelStudents' competence can be developed by teachers during the learning process and assessed from the indicators of the learning success. The low final examination scores are one of the indicators that students' competence is yet to be developed optimally. Research reveals that the verbal reasoning skills of state primary schools are adequate. Most students have mastered the learning materials of Indonesian language, nearly half of the students have mastered those of Social Studies and Mathematics, and only a small number of students have mastered those of Science. The verbal reasoning is a dominant predictor for Indonesian language mastery, while the numerical reasoning is a dominant predictor for the mastery of Mathematics but not a dominant predictor for the mastery of Science. Teachers need to improve the quality of the learning process in order to develop their students' potentials and competence.
