Isi artikelCivil Society is often considered as the main promotor of democracy. In many nations, civil society has been cheered for their substantial contribution to the transition, liberalization and consolidation of democracy. Cases from new democracies, however, indicate that civil society may lose its civility and reort to violence and autocratic behaviour, especially when it has been contaminated with extremism, ethnic hatred, chauvinism and jingoism. This paper argues that civil society has two faces. The "civil" face will certainly help democracy to grow and the "uncivil" character will render democracy to a possible setback or even collapse. By looking at Indonesia's experience, this paper will elaborate how uncivil society threatens the law enforcement in the country.
