Isi artikelIndustrial (or durable goods) distribution is a $ 1,6 trillion industry in transition. Information technology (IT), in particular, is changing the ways that wholesalers generated value in the channels of distribution. IT enables massive reductions in transaction costs among members of the supply chain from materials suppliers to end - product manufacturers. These changes are both evolutionary (focused on efficiency and cost reduction) and revolutionary (focused on fundamental redefinition of the industrial distributor's business and position in the industrial supply chain). This article addesses the causes and characterstics of the changes and then examines a five - step, IT - driven process for survival in the industrial distribution industry. Finally, it offers a look at sources on competitive advantage in the supply chain, after the relative impact of IT has diminished.
