But the good news won't last forever. The oldest members of the baby - boom generation will begin receiving social security retirement benefits in 2008, barely a decade away, three years later, they will become eligible for medicare. Those developments will place renewed pressure on the federal budget. Revenues will be pinched as the number of people working and paying taxes slows to a crawl, and outlays for entitlement programs gor the elderly will shoot up as demands for those programs intensify.
